Run GATE mocks with MCQ, MSQ and numerical questions on your own WordPress site

For GATE coaching institutes and test-series sellers. GATE mixes three question types with different marking rules. Turgor Exam Engine grades all three, including numerical answers within a range.

The GATE pattern

SectionQuestionsMarks
General Aptitude10 (5 × 1 mark, 5 × 2 marks)15
Subject (incl. engineering mathematics where applicable)5585
Total65100
Pattern as per the latest official notification at the time of writing. Always confirm against the current notice.

MCQs cost one third of their marks if wrong (1/3 for 1-mark, 2/3 for 2-mark questions). MSQs (one or more correct options, no partial credit) and numerical-answer questions carry no negative marking. The paper lasts 3 hours.

Set up a GATE mock in Turgor Exam Engine

The exam engine on this page (sections, negative marking per section, "evaluate first N", fullscreen lockdown and the CBT palette), bulk question import and the student dashboard are part of Turgor Exam Engine Pro. The free Turgor Exam Engine plugin covers courses, lessons and quizzes.

  1. Create one exam with two topics: General Aptitude and your subject.
  2. Import MCQs as single choice, MSQs as multiple choice (all correct options needed, as in GATE) and NAT questions as free-answer questions with the accepted range written as lo..hi.
  3. Set points per question to 1 or 2, and set negative marks per question: 1/3 or 2/3 for MCQs, 0 for MSQ and NAT.
  4. Set the duration to 180 minutes.
  5. Load the question bank from Excel, Word, JSON or a live Google Sheet. Give each question its section in the Category column and its marks in the Points column; LaTeX in questions and options renders through MathJax.

Good to know: GATE provides an on-screen virtual calculator. Turgor Exam Engine doesn’t include one, so tell students which calculator to use while practising.

What your students get

  • A CBT-style question palette: answered, not answered, not visited, marked for review, and answered & marked, with Save & Next and Mark for Review controls.
  • A server-side timer that keeps running if the page is closed and submits the paper automatically at zero.
  • Fullscreen lockdown: leaving fullscreen is logged, and the exam submits itself after three exits.
  • An instant result with score, class average, percentile and per-question explanations, plus a score trend across retakes.
  • A student dashboard with per-course scores, percentiles, streaks and an automatic “lessons to revisit” list.

Common questions

How are numerical answers checked?

Students type a number. It is marked correct if it falls inside the accepted range you set.

Are MSQs given partial marks?

No, matching GATE: an MSQ is correct only when every correct option, and nothing else, is selected.
