How lessonbasket.com runs 26 real exam papers in live exam mode

lessonbasket.com is a test-prep site for life-science and biotechnology entrance exams: CSIR-NET Life Sciences, GATE Life Sciences (XL), IIT JAM Biotechnology and GAT-B. Students sit previous-year papers exactly as the real exam scores them: timed, sectioned, with each exam’s own negative marking. All of it runs on Turgor Exam Engine.

Full disclosure: lessonbasket.com is run by the same team that builds Turgor Exam Engine. It’s where we test every feature on real papers before it ships.

The challenge

These exams don’t score like a normal quiz, and most WordPress quiz plugins can’t reproduce them:

  • CSIR-NET and GAT-B only grade a fixed number of answers. A student who answers 20 questions in CSIR-NET Part A is graded on the first 15.
  • GATE and JAM mix three question types with different rules: MCQs lose marks when wrong, multiple-select questions need every correct option, and numerical answers are accepted within a range.
  • Every paper has diagrams, equations and Greek-letter notation that have to survive import intact.
  • Students expect the real CBT screen: a question palette, mark for review, a running timer, and an all-India-style percentile at the end.

How it is built

  1. Each paper was typed up from the official PDF, checked against the official answer key, and imported from Excel with Quiz Toolkit. Diagrams, structures and graphs are attached to the question as images.
  2. Every question carries its syllabus unit and sub-topic, so results break a score down topic by topic.
  3. Exams use topics for the paper’s Parts, per-topic negative marking, and the “evaluate first N answered” setting for CSIR-NET and GAT-B.
  4. Numerical-answer questions accept a value or a range, written lo..hi. Range grading was added to the engine for these GATE and JAM papers, because their official keys give ranges.
  5. Papers sit inside courses, one per exam, with sign-up required. Students take them in fullscreen, with the timer on the server so a dropped connection doesn’t cost them time.

What students see

  • The CBT exam screen: question palette, Save & Next, Mark for Review, and a timer that submits the paper at zero.
  • An instant result with score, class average, percentile and the explanation for every question.
  • A dashboard with scores per course, streaks, an activity heatmap and a list of lessons to revisit.
