Question types
All eight question types: how to write each one and how it is marked.
Watch the how-to: One question bank for every exam
Turgor Exam Engine has eight question types. Seven are marked the moment a student submits; essays wait for a teacher on the Results screen.
Choose the type at the top of the question form, under Type. The answer rows below change to fit it.
| Type | What the student does | How it is marked |
|---|---|---|
| Single choice | Picks one option | Right if they pick the one ticked answer |
| Multiple choice | Ticks every option that applies | Right only if they tick exactly the ticked answers |
| Fill in the blank | Types into gaps in a sentence | Every gap must match; case is ignored |
| Free answer | Types a short answer or a number | Right if it matches any accepted answer; ranges allowed |
| Sorting | Puts items in order with up and down arrows | Right only in the exact order |
| Matching | Picks a match for each item from a list | Right only if every pair is right |
| Rating scale | Picks one point on a scale | Earns that point’s score; never wrong |
| Essay | Writes an answer in a text box | Marked by a teacher on the Results screen |
Single and multiple choice
Write one option per row and tick the correct ones. Blank rows are ignored. Click Add image on a row to make that option a picture, such as a diagram or a graph.
Fill in the blank
Write the sentence in Sentence with gaps and put each answer in braces:
The powerhouse of the cell is the {mitochondrion}.{one|3}makes that gap worth 3 marks.{[one][two]}accepts either answer.
Free answer
Add one accepted answer per row and tick it. A student’s answer is right if it matches any ticked row, ignoring case and extra spaces.
For a numerical answer, write a range with two dots: 6300..6400 accepts any number from 6300 to 6400, the way GATE and IIT JAM publish their answer keys.
Sorting
Write the items top to bottom in their correct order. Each student sees them in a different shuffled order and moves them with the up and down arrows. The correct order is never sent to the student’s browser.
Matching
Each row is an item and its match, such as France and Paris. Students see the matches shuffled in a list beside each item and pick one for each. Every pair must be right for the marks.
Rating scale
Each row is one point on the scale, in order (for example Strongly disagree to Strongly agree), with the Score it earns. The question is worth its top score, and no point counts as a wrong answer, so negative marking never applies.
Essay
Students write their answer in a text box. When they submit, the rest of the paper is marked straight away and their result says how many written answers are waiting for the teacher. Mark them on the Results screen; the student’s score goes up by whatever you award. See The Results screen.
Marks and negative marks
Marks is what the question is worth. Negative marks overrides the quiz’s own deduction for this one question: leave it blank to use the quiz’s rate, or enter a number (0 included) to replace it. Deductions apply only while Negative marking is on in the quiz’s settings, and unanswered questions are never penalised.
Turgor Exam Engine Pro: Exam Mode can give part marks on multiple choice when some correct options are ticked and no wrong one (JEE Advanced style). The Partial marks box appears on the form once Pro is installed.
